GERD if elaborated would mean Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. GERD is also known as "reflux," "reflux esophagitis," or sometimes even "hiatus hernia". This condition can be described as backflow of acid from the stomach into the swallowing tube or esophagus. People misinterpret it as heartburn which is one of the common symptoms. This acidic fluid is very harmful as it has the necessary weaponry to disrupt the lining on the inside of the esophagus. You may tend to feel a burning sensation behind the breastbone. This tends to happen mainly after your meals. Heartburn which occurs more than twice a week can be considered as GERD. If proper care is not taken it can turn into a serious health problem. It can go to the extent of disrupting the esophagus. Once in everyone's lifetime you may come face to face with gastroesophageal reflux and everyone knows it is not a good feeling.

The symptoms of GERD are heartburn, taste of sour and bitter fluid in the mouth, difficulty in swallowing and chest pain. You can also go through sudden bouts of coughing, asthma and wheezing, burning sensation of the vocal chords with hoarseness in the voice. Even though it is common among adults children including infants also get subjected to this disease. This condition can be worsened by the having the wrong food. Spicy food is the main culprit to create further complication in this condition. A restricted diet is recommended when you are suffering from this condition. Some of the causes which help the GERD condition are extensive alcohol abuse, obesity, large meals, diabetes, pregnancy as well as smoking. There are triggering agents who can cause this reflux such as citrus fruits, carbonated beverages, mint, chocolate, caffeine and spicy food. Other causes like lying down soon after eating meals can also create this problem.

Home Remedies for GERD/Heartburn

As heartburn is one of symptom of GERD you will find some remedies similar to Heartburn. There are no sole home remedies for GERD but some ways of easing the heartburn

?Drinking milk may ease the heartburn. By drinking fat free milk in small portions and in equal time successions may provide you with some comfort.

?Keep your diet healthy and hydrated. Include fresh fruits and vegetables which would help to keep your system clean and less acidic.

?Try drinking green tea or herbal tea such as chamomile, peppermint, ginger to break free from this heartburning problem.

?Consume food which are easily digestible and would not cause acidic reaction in your stomach leading to heartburn.

?Consuming ginger is known calm down the heartburn and upset stomach. You can have 500mg of ginger with a glass of water.
