What are Anabolic Steroids?

Anabolic steroids are not a single drug but a term used to describe a variety of drugs like Testosterone (which is also naturally produced in the human body in small amounts), methandrostenolone (Dianabol) and other testosterone derivatives. Anabolic steroids are also known as Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids as they are naturally produced in men in greater amounts then women.

e) Improve bone marrow production

Anabolic Steroid Abuse

The use of anabolic steroids as performance enhancers has been banned by all major sporting authorities in the world, not only are anabolic steroids banned but misuse and overdose of anabolic steroids cause side effects like

a) Hypertension
b) Cardio-vascular diseases
c) Infertility in males and gynecomastia

There are also unwanted cosmetic side effects like premature balding, unwanted hair growth in women. To avoid the abuse of Anabolic steroids many countries have placed restrictions and bans on there use. There are also numerous rumours that are associated with anabolic steroid abuse, some of the common misconceptions are high mortality among users and permanent muscle wasting.

Use of Anabolic Steroids in body building

Controlled use of anabolic steroids is now a common phenomenon among professional and armature body builders alike, with the supervised use of anabolic steroids it is possible for body builders to increase muscle mass rapidly, while minimizing the side effects of anabolic steroids. The use of steroids by body builders has been a topic of much controversy and is a moot point in body building circles. Although body builders are forbidden from using anabolic steroids by most body building associations, most dope test do not effectively screen for newer anabolic steroid derivatives.
