Systems Administrators
Systems Administrators are expected to be efficient in diagnosing and fixing problems fast and with accuracy. It is essential for a system administrator to have a substantial understanding of various programming languages used for computing various tasks. In addition, they should be able to understand the nature of the software, to organize and use it for troubleshooting. A systems administrator needs to have intense knowledge about computer security. The job involves deployment of software patches and the deterrence of break-in and other security related issues, along with preventive measures.
Responsibilities
The basic responsibilities of a system administrator include security check of systems and software, documentation of the system configuration and troubleshooting of the reported complaints. He must be able to backup data, apply operating system updates and arrange specific changes, to develop a better system. He should be able to answer technical queries and solve several technical problems, thereby keeping the network up and running. System administrators are in demand in several organizations as Technical Support staff, Network Administrators, Application Analysts, Security Administrators, Database Administrators and Programmers. Moreover, they also have ample scope in financial industries, database and UNIX administration.
Systems Engineering
System engineering is one of the most lucrative careers in the field of computer technology and involves the realization and deployment of successful systems. It combines several disciplines and specialty groups and forms a well-organized development process, proceeding from the concept to the production and operation. The use of computers benefits both the business, as well as the technical needs of the customers and provides quality products that meet the specified needs of the user. While civil engineers design buildings and electrical engineers design circuits, a system engineer works with abstract systems and depends on other engineering disciplines to develop and deliver many tangible products.
Responsibilities
A system engineer is mainly responsible for handling specific customer needs, developing business operations, documenting specifications and finally, initiating design synthesis and system validation, to solve several systems related issues. Below are the different methods and tools that are often used by system engineers:
- Functional analysis
- Communications protocol design and specification
- Fault modeling
- Simulation and modeling
- Interface design and specification
- System architecture and design
- Verification and validation or acceptance testing
Over the years, the demand for system engineers has been increasing. The job of a system engineer is basically to authenticate assumptions and come up with workable theories. Even extremely complex systems like aircrafts are modeled and simulated by system engineers. In addition to having a promising career in various companies, organizations and aviation, systems engineers also have job opportunities in power plants, the medical machinery and spacecraft industry. Efficient system engineers are hired in these industries to assure normal functioning of the various complex systems and to avoid unnecessary complications. They also work towards cost efficiency and providing assurance for quality improvement and success of a project.
