Where The Lingerie Item Known As The Chemise Comes From

Called the "leine" by the Irish, the chemise started as a simple shirt that was worn under the clothes. In an age where people didn't bathe or launder clothing frequently, the chemise kept body oils and sweat from staining outer clothing. The chemise was usually of cotton or other common material that could be washed more frequently than the more delicate silks of outer garments.
In the Middle Ages, chemises were worn by men and women. As bathing became more commonly practiced, the use of chemises by men has largely disappeared. The descendant of the men's chemise can be found in the modern undershirt that many men still wear beneath their shirts.
Chemises have remained popular with women although not for the original purpose. The modern chemise has many purposes, largely depending on the material used to create it. Cotton and satin traditional chemises are still highly used as undergarments for delicate or sheer outer clothing styles. Since these chemises are used under other clothing, they are usually made in colors designed to blend or hide under other fabric colors. Therefore, the majority of undergarment chemises are still made in white, cream or black.
Chemise style outer clothing has become in vogue. With the wider choice of fabrics and materials available in modern times, chemises can be created in any combination to suit any woman. From fancy chemise shirts to flirty chemise dresses, the style is fun and comfortable at any age. Plain or embellished, chemises can be seen in any store where fashionable clothing is sold.
When you mention chemises to most people, they still think of lingerie in one form or another. This style of lingerie is one of the most widely versatile styles. Depending on the fabrics used, the chemise as lingerie can be anywhere from sweet and innocent to ultra-hot and sexy.
Simple t-shirt knit chemises are a lightweight sleepwear option and one of the most comfortable choices. This style can be embellished with ribbon, appliques, or lace for a fancier look. This is the chemise at it's most basic and remains a favorite with women for it's ease and comfort. This type of sleepwear is a good choice for any age.
At the other end of the scale is the sexy teddy style chemise guaranteed to drive men crazy. This can be made from satin for a sweet and flirty look that feels great to wear. It can also be created from anything from sheer lace all the way to buttery soft leather. Each material gives the classic teddy a different look and feel.
The chemise has been in style for hundreds of years and will continue to remain popular. With the huge array of fabric choices and color combinations, you have a look that can carry you through the day or keep you up all night. No other style has the versatility of the chemise which is why it has stayed a favorite for so long and will remain so in the future.
